My reaction to GoPHP5

I have been lucky enough to be writing PHP5 code for the past couple years. However, some people haven’t been as fortunate. A week ago GoPHP5 launched a scheme that on February 5th, 2008 everyone should now be using PHP5.

PHP 4 has served the web developer community for seven years now, and served it well… The PHP developer community has decided that it is indeed now time to move forward, together.

This is a great step towards stopping the problem that many Web hosts only support PHP4 which in turn forces developers to also develop for PHP4. A vicious circle indeed as they mention.

What does this mean to you?

Although this is only a small step, it is opening the communities eyes to what is really happening and the problems it causes, and a step in the right direction. You can help from now on producing PHP5 code, and requesting your Web host supports in some form. It’s that simple.
